Adult Continuing Education
Once we graduate from college, we think we can take on the world! We have a degree, and we can finally begin working in the field we have chosen. Once we secured a job in our desired field though, our jobs take on a new meaning. We don't want to stay where we are, we want to advance. Because of our longing for advancement, many of us find that as a working adult, continuing education becomes a priority.
So — why is adult continuing education such a priority? The associates or bachelor's degree that you have worked so hard for is a great tool to get yourself in the door, but in many cases, higher education is essential in order to advance in the workplace. Browsing through job listings, many jobs state that a Master's Degree or other higher certifications are a job requirement. Furthering your education will make you more marketable for advancement.
Although an entry-level salary may be, or may have been adequate when you first begin working — as time goes on, making more money becomes important. In many companies, additional certifications come hand in hand with pay scale increases. Adult continuing education is essential in obtaining higher certifications, and in turn, a higher salary.
Continuing education is a great resume booster. As potential employers sift through piles of resumes, those with more certifications and higher degrees are sure to stand out. When job seekers have a number of certifications, it proves to employers that they are willing to work hard, and that hiring them will be of great benefit to the company, and higher degrees are a bargaining tool for negotiating salary when a job is offered to you.
Many professions dictate that workers need to continue their education in order to keep up with advancements in the field. For example, continuous changes in the medical, technological and educational fields bring about the need for continuing education. Even seasoned veterans in these fields need to further their education in order to gain knowledge of current practices.
Adult continuing education is an essential part of being marketable in the workplace. You are never too old to further your education, and it can only be of benefit to you, and to those around you.
