Continuing Education for Nurses
When working in a field that is changing, practically by the day, it is essential to keep yourself informed. As nurses are the medical workers who spend the most time with patients, continuing education for nurses is exceptionally important.
There are a myriad of reasons continuing education for nurses is important. In the personal sector, higher education allows nurses to market themselves for higher pay and career advancement. Nursing degrees are one of the highest paying degrees. Nurses continue their education in specific fields, to be able work in a specified, desired field, which often offers greater responsibility, satisfaction and higher pay. Above all, as a bridge between patient and doctor, providing constant care to a patient, while reporting to a supervising doctor, a highly educated nurse is of utmost importance for the well being of a patient in any health care setting.
There are many paths a nurse can take, depending on to what extent one is willing to continue his or her education. Many nurses start working with an associate degree in nursing (ADN) and work towards a bachelor's of science in nursing (BSN) later on in order to take on a broader scope of practice. Education is necessary to work towards becoming a registered nurse (RN), and to pass the national licensing exam, the NCLEX-RN exam. If one wants to become an advanced practice nurse, such as a clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, nurse-midwife or a nurse practitioner, they must also obtain a Master's Degree in addition to the above certifications.
Once you are a registered nurse, continuing education is essential, simply based on the ever-changing health field, and the need for specialization. Nurses can stay on top with online courses that allow for nurses to keep doing the work they do best, while maintaining their certifications, and advancing.
