Continuing Professional Education
Obtaining a job in your chosen field may feel like the end of the road when it comes to education — after having been in school for most of your life, you have finally made it to where you have been longing to be. In many positions though, continuing professional education is required to retain your certification and stay competitive, so being in school is not just a memory, but a reality for the duration of your career.
In professions such as accounting, medicine or education, practices change constantly, and continuing education is required by the state certifying board in order to keep ones professional license. The reasoning behind this is that the workers in these professions must remain educated on any changes in their professional environment in order to remain a productive, valuable member of the work force. Pay increases and professional advancement may also accompany furthering education, so it is of benefit to both the employer and an employee.
In many professions, employees have a certain amount of time after receiving a certification in order to begin working on the next higher level of education, and if this time limit is exceeded, their license to practice in the chosen profession lapses. Staying up to date on current technologies and practices is a priority.
Employees do not necessarily need to enroll in college again to continue learning, much of the time employers will offer internal seminars, or opportunities to attend external seminars and workshops for continuing professional education. Also, many employers will foot the bill to send their employees back to school, and offer tuition reimbursement for any continuing education courses or programs the employee chooses to enroll in, so it is important to reach out to your employer when considering continuation of you professional education.
