In reality, the cost of online education is in most cases comparable to the cost of attending a traditional school to get the same degree. On average, the cost per three credit course at an online school ranges from about $700 to $900. This averages out to about $7,500 per semester for a full time program, or a grand total of about $30,000 for a full program. If you are searching for a certificate program, the cost of the total program will be less, considering earning a certificate online typically only requires about 30 credits, where other degree programs consists of about 90.
The reason that the cost of an online degree may appear to be dramatically less, in most cases, lies in the fact that fewer costs are directly related to obtaining an online degree. There is no cost for living on campus. This alone will save the typical student over ten thousand dollars per year! There is also no cost for transportation to and from the school, or other costs associated with travel (such as food).
The cost is also far lower in some cases because of students taking advantage of being "distance" learners. The cost of many colleges and universities is exponentially higher for in state residents of their schools who choose not to reside on the campus. These prices are rarely charged to distance learners, making the cost of obtaining an online degree nearly half the price!

The cost of an online education can be heightened though, if you do not meet certain deadlines for application requirements, course registration, or even activities such as graduation.
