Financial Aid for Online Degrees
When seeking to obtain an online degree, a big question that many people ask is, "Can I get financial aid for an online degree?" It is a fairly common misconception that online schools are not as valid as traditional colleges and universities, and therefore will not qualify for financial aid, when, in fact — most online schools do!
Most online colleges qualify for traditional financial aid, so long as they are accredited universities. Financial aid is obtained in the same way whether it is for an online education or a campus-based education, students must fill out the FAFSA — The Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This form can be filled out either electronically, or on paper and mailed in. The application takes into consideration the student's circumstances and financial standing, and determines how much federal aid they qualify for. Financial aid options can come in the form of federal student loans, private student loans, and grant or scholarship money. Grant money is money that is given to the student for the purpose of education, and does not need to be paid back to the lender, where as both federal and private student loans will need to be paid back by the student over the course of time after that student has completed their online degree.
When filling out the FAFSA form, a student can choose to have it sent to a number of schools, so that the schools have it on file by the time the student applies for admission. Each school has a FAFSA school code, which can be filled out by the student during the process of applying for loans.
Many online schools also have their own private forms of financial aid. Information about this type of financial aid can often be found on the schools website, or by inquiring about financial aid options when expressing interest in a certain online school. Schools can have varying options for private financial aid, such as private scholarships offered to students enrolling in certain programs, or traditional financial aid packets which are paid back directly to the school.
