Free Online Degrees

Free Online Degrees

Many prospective students don't have the money to enroll in school, and the thought of piling on more debt in the form of student loans is simply overwhelming. After daydreaming about how great it would be if college was free, like high school was, many prospective students resign themselves to the dead end jobs that they can obtain without furthering their education simply because of the high entry cost. But, it doesn't necessarily have to be like this! If a student wants to learn they should start by looking online. Although a free online degree doesn't exist in its entirity, there is a way to further your education online for free.

What is the catch in this situation? We all know that nothing in life is free, so you may be surprised to find that many well-established, accredited universities actually offer free courses online. Just by visiting their websites, you can view online seminars from schools like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Carnegie Melon University, Stanford University, Tufts University, Utah State University and the University of California at both Berkeley and Irvine. Many of these free online courses will offer course assignments and lecture notes, as well as supplementary materials that you can print out at home. Stanford University even offers course materials that can be downloaded to iTunes! Between these schools alone, thousands of free online degree courses and tutorials in a wide range of subject matters are offered, and these are open to anyone with computer access.

The downside to free online degree courses is that you are never technically considered a student at the school, so the idea of obtaining a free degree online is not 100% realistic. Though you will obtain a vast amount of knowledge, and may have even completed a great deal of coursework – you are not considered a graduate when you complete the program. Although it cannot hurt to inform prospective employers of the studies you have completed, students cannot tout themselves as graduates of an online school or university, even if they put "online" in the title.

Who Benefits From Free Online Degree Classes?

So, who actually benefits from free online degree courses, when they are not actually going to be obtaining free online degrees? The answer to this is that just about everyone can benefit from taking free courses online! From the amateur website designer to the freelance writer who hopes to hone their skills, there are classes out there for just about everyone! Many employers will look past the lack of a degree, if their employees can prove that they have gained the necessary knowledge from a free program, and in this case – employees can advance in the workplace with the use of free online courses!
