Will I ever have to go to a campus in my online program?
Many students opt to pursue online degrees for the convenience factor. Obtaining a degree online means that they don't have to schedule specific times to perform coursework, they can do it at their convenience. If they didn't get a chance to finish it during the day, eleven o'clock in the evening is a perfectly appropriate time to submit an assignment! There is no need to worry about finding child care during class time. No one is going to hear the kids yelling over the computer, and it doesn't matter if they are typing a term paper with a baby on their lap! They do not have to worry about finding transportation to campus, or being late to class because of work conflicts. Inclement weather isn't going to stop them from earning an online education! They don't even have to worry about getting out of their pajamas, if that is what they choose to do! But — is this really true? Can you really get a degree completely online? Or, are you asking yourself, "Will I ever have to go to campus during my online education program?"
The answer to this lies in the online degree program you choose to attend. In most cases, students pursuing online degrees are not required to go to campus during their programs. Students in online degree programs are often scattered throughout the country, or even across the world. Online colleges realize that asking a student to make a lengthy trip to the campus itself is an unfeasible task in many cases. In this fashion, if you choose to attend a program that is listed as "completely online," you will not be required to go to campus for any reason.
If, however, you choose to attend an online education program which has satellite campuses, there are some situations in which you will be required to make an appearance on campus. Some online degree programs are "semi-online," meaning that students must attend a certain amount of class sessions in a classroom on the campus of the school. Often, this means that a student must attend the first and last class of a particular online course in a classroom setting, and perform coursework for the majority of the class in the online setting. In other cases, students only have to attend one class in the course, which is usually the final class, in order to present their final project.
If students choose an online degree program that is provided by a traditional college, there is often an on campus component also. Students are often expected to meet with an advisor before beginning an online program, and check in throughout the course of the program. At times, final projects must be delivered to the professor either in person or via mail.
In most cases, students who are enrolled in online colleges are required to attend class only in the online realm, never actually attending any classes on campus. There will never be a "surprise" need to visit campus! If there is a need to go to the campus at any time during the program, it will be outlined when you begin the application process. You will not find out that you need to travel across the country to make a presentation with only days to spare!
