Online Law Degrees

A law degree is an advanced degree that is pursued after obtaining a 4-year bachelor's degree with any major, though some of the more common 4-year degrees held by those in law school include political science, business, English, criminal justice, international relations, and accounting. An online law degree may be pursued by those who wish to practice law, or wish to incorporate legal knowledge into their profession as an entrepreneur, corporate consultant or chief executive.

In most settings obtaining a law degree is largely dependent on how well you score on your Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Online law schools in many states are still awaiting full accreditation by the American Bar Association (ABA). Online law degrees, or earning your Juris Doctor (JD) degree online is best done in states where the ABA is granting online law school students to take the written bar exam for the state(s) or regions in which they plan to practice. A bar exam has two sections, federal and state law and while federal is shared by all you need to study the state-specific laws for the latter half — making where and which state's law you study fairly important. If you wish to earn an online law degree, and practice law in California, the best online law degree program is the Juris Doctor program at Concord Law School of Kaplan University. For other states you should check the American Bar Association's website for an accredited law school in your state.

The distinction between an online law degree and a campus-based law degree is debatable. While many argue that regardless of where you learn, a law degree should be granted to those who can accurately represent, adhere to, and assess situations based on federal and state law — where you learn is still being considered by the bar association at present. Other arguments include the idea that this is a further attempt to restrict opportunities to the wealthy, who have access to accredited institutions. However, like most policies, the accreditation of online law degrees may be slow to come, but there are many fighting for its approval. For now, we would like to highlight other degrees in the legal field that are currently available to those in any state. Browse the listings below to learn more.
