Online IT Degrees

Online Information Technology Degrees

When most people think about information technology (or IT for short), they think about computers. Considering that the field of IT is really the use of computers and software to manage information, it makes a great deal of sense that there would be a great deal of online IT degrees available, because after all — the Internet is an integral part of information technology!

Career Paths for Online IT Degree Graduates

So, what kinds of careers are available once students graduate with online IT degrees? The term "IT" actually encompasses an extremely wide range of professions. Those interested in this area may also opt to earn an online computer science degree. In a typical IT department, employees perform the complex functions needed in order to retain the use of the computer system in a company. The use of servers, computers, database management systems and cryptography is an essential day-to-day function. Most IT departments are made up of a group of people, typically including a group of several system administrators and database administrators, and at least one Information Technology Manager. The entire group typically reports to the Chief Information Officer. The popular areas of information technology vary by the moment because of the complexity of the ever-evolving field. Some of the most popular areas of study are computer networking, project management, business intelligence, Linux, Unix, IT governance and information security. Because of the great array of subjects to be studied, the job market is vast.

Whereas in some fields, online degrees may not be considered on as high of a standard as degrees obtained at a traditional campus based school — online IT degrees are generally highly regarded in the field, so long as they come from an accredited institution. Without having gone through the process of accreditation, a school is often not considered to offer valid degrees, and therefore obtaining an education from an unaccredited school is a risk that is most likely not worth taking. Once a school has obtained accreditation, it is considered to provide a high quality, well-rounded education, and the degrees granted upon completion will help a graduate to obtain gainful employment!

Online IT Certifications

There are a great range of certifications that can be obtained in the field of IT, including Information Security Certifications, Oracle DBA Certifications, Microsoft Certifications, Cisco Certifications and PMP Certifications. Though IT professionals are able to enter into the workforce after obtaining only certifications (often in entry level positions), many choose to obtain Bachelor's degree online or Masters degrees, as the pay scale increases greatly when one has completed the studies needed to obtain higher order degrees, and the chances of advancement in the workforce are greatly improved.
