What hardware do you need in order to be successful in an online education program?

Students pursuing online education often need to have particular hardware on their computers, and for good reason! If you are pursuing a degree through an online college or university, but do not have the proper computer hardware needed to perform and back up the coursework, your pursuit of academic success in the online realm may be short lived!

Technology needed to complete an online degree

In most cases, at the most basic level students need to have a computer with high speed internet access. If internet access is not fast enough, a student may have difficulty in accessing sites required to complete course work or view lectures and lecture notes. Communication in the online forum is necessary when learning in online degree programs, and if a student is not able to communicate in this fashion, the chance for success in their chosen program is thwarted.

Students are often required to have multiple programs running on their computers at the same time. As a computers performance is slowed with the running of multiple applications, many schools require that students have at least 512 Mb of RAM installed on the computer with which they will be conducting the work for their online education program.

A CD Rom is essential when pursuing online degrees, as many components of courses (such as lecture notes and text books) are offered in the CD format. It is also a good idea to have at least 2MB of space available on your computer in order to install any software that may be required for specific courses. In many cases, students will need to watch videos for assignments, and therefore a computer with working speakers is also recommended.

Typically, most online colleges recommend using a Windows operating system, and require that assignments be completed and submitted using Microsoft Office Suite (such as Power Point, Excel or Microsoft Word). Internet Explorer and Firefox are widely accepted browsers with which most online college websites will run optimally. Some sort of Anti-Virus software is highly recommended, as students will be both downloading and uploading assignments into a web forum at most points. Many online colleges will offer Anti-Virus software to students at no cost.

In some online education programs, such as programs in the medical and technology fields, additional software is required in order to complete course assignments. When applying to online schools, all schools will notify students of the minimum hardware requirements needed in order to effectively pursue online degrees!
