- Online Course Lecture Style
What is the lecture style for online courses?
When deciding to pursue your online education, you probably have a vision in your mind of what your experience will be like. The flexibility of the program will allow you to perform your coursework from anywhere that has internet access, so you will never have to worry about not making it to class in inclement weather. If your children are in the background making a lot of noise – it isn’t going to matter! None of your classmates can hear them! And those pajama pants you are wearing? Don’t worry – no one can see! But, after these visions pass through your mind, do you then start to question how, exactly, you will learn? Are all of your assignments computer generated? Or are there actually professors out there, somewhere?
The answer to your question is yes, there are actually professors out there. And, each of these professors will come with a drastically different teaching style, even if they are all in a virtual world!
So, how are you to learn? Does your professor simply tell you to crack open a book and get to reading? In some cases – yes. In most cases though, the professor will provide you with electronic text books to read throughout the course of your online class, and lecture notes to supplement these texts. And, contrary to popular belief – there are many different lecture styles which a professor may use, even if you can’t actually hear them lecturing! Or, can you?
Some professors will choose to provide students with video lectures. These can be live feeds from a webcam, allowing students to connect directly with their professor, or these may be previously recorded lectures, which students simply watch and take notes from. In order to view such lectures, students must have specific programs and plug ins installed on their computers, as well as properly functioning computer speakers. Students will be informed of such a need prior to the start of the online course.
In other cases, professors provide students with audio recordings of lectures. Students are able to click on links, and listen to the professor providing the lesson. Again, students may be required to have additional programs on their computers in order to access these lectures.
In a totally different realm, some professors choose to keep the online education process completely online, and provide students with written lecture notes. This may actually be an easier way for some students to retain information, as they do not need to write any of the information down in order to study it – it is already written for them. For visual or auditory learners, however, this may be a difficult transition from a traditional campus based, in person approach to learning.
As there are in traditional campus based programs, there are an infinite variety of professors out there – and an infinite variety of lecture styles to accompany them! Lecture styles for online courses will most likely be different depending on the school, and the professor, keeping your online education interesting!
