Once you decide to pursue an online degree, where do you start?

The general roadmap on how to get started with online education

The pursuit of an online education can be confusing. Unlike when students apply to traditional "brick and mortar" colleges, students applying to online colleges do not typically have the opportunity to sit down across from their academic advisor and create a roadmap to their educational journey. In this fashion, the online degree can outwardly appear to be a potentially isolating and overwhelming experience. But, contrary to popular belief, the online student is not simply alone with their computer while attempting to figure out how they will begin pursuing their educational goals!

Believe it or not, there are actual human beings behind the scenes of online colleges! These colleges and universities are not simply controlled by automated responses sent via email or wall post! Behind each online college's website is a wide array of people who are there to help potential and current students who seek assistance. Admissions counselors are on hand to assist with the application process. These counselors typically contact potential students by phone or email when students express interest in the colleges programs. After reaching out to students, admissions counselors lead students through the application process, explaining what is needed at each point, such as forms, transcripts, and admittance essays. Admissions counselors can also assist students in finding out whether previously earned credits are transferrable, and what steps to take in order to make sure that a student earns credit for those classes which are able to be transferred.

Once a student is admitted to the online degree program of their choosing, they are not simply left to their own devices! Students are assigned to an academic counselor, who can provide assistance in choosing courses and designing a course schedule. This counselor can answer questions about the program and its requirements, as well as questions about the school itself and online education in general. Such as how do you take tests for online courses? If at any time a student needs assistance throughout the program, be it taking a leave of absence, withdrawing from a class, or switching a class — their academic counselor is there to assist them in any way possible.

The only difference between admissions counselors and academic counselors at online colleges and traditional campus based colleges is that students pursuing online degrees most often never meet with their counselors face to face. Contact is made over the phone or via the computer, just as online courses are performed!

Creating a roadmap to your college education may seem as if it is an overwhelming process to take on alone, but rest assured — there is plenty of assistance out there if you ask for it! Click here to learn more about online schools.
