It is no doubt that if you have ever been in a courtroom or witnessed a trial of any sort on television – you have noticed the court stenographer. You know, that person who sits near the judge, typing furiously throughout the entire trial? What is the purpose, exactly, of this person in the courtroom? The truth is that this person plays a huge role in the judicial system! Without a court reporter, documentation of trials would suffer greatly. Every word that is spoken during a trial must be documented in writing. This documentation process is the work of the court reporter and what you will study in an online degree in this field. As an individual who has exceptional grammar, punctuation and spelling skills, the court reporter transcribes each word that is spoken in the courtroom. Great listening ability lends to a successful career as a court stenographer, as it is imperative that they need to have the ability to speak, listen and type at the same time. Court reporters must also pay attention to the goings on around the courtroom, as these instances may be needed for further documentation.
Court reporters have many functions in the courtroom. Among these are providing administrative support to judges and attorneys, keeping track of transcript traffic, keeping an inventory of courtroom supplies and ordering new ones as necessary, keeping financial logs, and coding and cross referencing court logs.
Online court reporting schools are an extremely effective way for students to become trained as court reporters. A typical, classroom-based court reporting program can be completed in approximately 33-36 months, whereas an online court reporting school can be completed in as little as one year's time. The reason for this is that many online court reporting schools are self paced, so students can work more quickly if their schedules allow — which is the case for most online schools. A typical course load consists of classes such as computer motorized shorthand, dictation speed building, legal terminology, grammar and punctuation, foundations of language and writing, human relations, courtroom transcription, business basics, transcription of both live and taped events, courtroom procedures, and usage of stenography equipment. At the completion of a court-reporting course, students receive a certification, which is usually administered by an organization such as the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers.
Once trained as a court reporter, a graduate can take pride in the fact that their computer aided transcription (or CAT) processes remain the fastest and most accurate way in which to turn the information spoken in a courtroom into readable, searchable permanent text. And, although the courtroom is where most people envision a stenographer to be, only about a quarter of trained stenographers work full time in courtrooms. The skills learned in online court reporting schools can translate to other positions, such as reporting for webcasts and broadcast captioning.
