Online Engineering Schools
Online engineering schools are gaining popularity, as they enable engineers to work towards higher order degrees while keeping their current positions. In the simplest description, engineers are the creators, safety testers and modifiers of things we use in every day life. From buildings to roads, light switches to tools – engineers have had a hand in creating it and making it work to the best of its ability! And, while the field of engineering is an exiting and lucrative career to work in, it is also a difficult one to get into. At the minimum, engineers need a bachelor's degree to get into entry-level positions. Often, employers will not consider an engineer for employment unless they have obtained a degree at the master's degree level. Because of this, online schools have began to offer online engineering degrees in a variety of fields.
Where to Find the Best Online Engineering Schools
There are many schools that boast offering engineering degrees online. Students must ensure that the online engineering schools they are choosing to apply to are accredited online schools, and established institutions of higher learning. Newer schools, and non-legitimate schools will not have not gone through the process of accreditation, and this makes the degree you earn often times riskier, as the degrees may not be respected down the line by prospective employers, or by other higher education institutions. In the latter case, credits cannot be transferred or a whole degree may not be recognized if it was not obtained at an accredited institution.
While this is important to be wary of, also be aware that there are many online schools that offer quality online engineering degrees in a variety of specialties. Among these are Colorado Technical University, University of Phoenix Online, Walden University, Ashford University, and Penn Foster College – just to name a few!
Engineering Specialties
There are a wide range of specialties in the field of engineering, including technology engineering, civil engineering, aeronautical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering and automotive engineering. Depending on the subset a student chooses, they stand to make between $37,000 and $120,000 per year. The dramatic difference between these salaries exists because they are dependent on the amount of work experience and education an engineer has. Those who have achieved higher degrees, earn on the higher end of this range. For this reason, many engineers begin working towards their masters or doctorate degrees after they have obtained entry-level positions – many choose to study online.
Online engineering schools are extremely convenient for these engineers, as they are able to further their education while continuing to work in their chosen fields. The convenience factor exists as students in online education programs are able to submit assignments at times that are convenient to them, and from anywhere with an Internet connection. In this fashion, engineers can move ahead in their field, while never leaving the workforce!
