To become a pharmacist, one needs to complete a six-year degree along with an internship, and then earn a license from the state in which they hope to be employed. On average, an entry-level pharmacy technician can expect to earn just under $30,000 per year, depending on geographical location. As most pharmacies cannot afford to employ more then one to two pharmacists due to the hefty $70,000+ price tag that they come with, there are a great deal of pharmacy technician positions open at any given time. Pharmacy technician will work under the direction of the pharmacist, assisting them with many responsibilities. While the pharmacist will often handle just the filling of multiple prescriptions, the technician handles things such as assisting patients, customer service, handling the filing of insurance, cross referencing medications to ensure that patients are not taking drugs which will have adverse interactions, cross referencing medications to ensure that patients have not filled prescriptions multiple times at separate pharmacies and bottle preparation for the prescriptions which the pharmacist is filing.
In order to become a pharmacy technician, one does not need to obtain a college degree, though a high school diploma or GED is required. A pharmacy technician certificate program can be completed in approximately one year, and it can be done completely in the online realm. In this fashion, students can often complete their certificate programs at their own pace, and continue to be employed at their current positions at the same time. Assignments can be completed at times that are convenient to the student; from anywhere that has an Internet connection.
Completing the certificate program online also offers students the ability to save money on transportation and room and board during their education. Once the certificate program is completed, students need to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certified Board exam in order to become a practicing pharmacy technician. Attending an online pharmacy technician school will ultimately prepare students to pass this exam, and move on to a gratifying position in the field of medicine! Obtaining experience in the job of a pharmacy technician will also give someone invaluable experience if they are to decide to move forward in their pursuit of a pharmacy degree!
