Students may list up to ten colleges in the online version of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Each college will receive a copy of the information listed on the student’s FAFSA.
If students want to send their information to more than ten schools, they can delete and add schools once they receive their electronic Student Aid Report (SAR), SAR Acknowledgment or paper SAR. Receipt of the SAR is a sign that the colleges listed on the FAFSA have received their copy of the information submitted on the FAFSA. (The college’s version of the SAR is called an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR).)
How to Add Schools to the FAFSA
Students can add, delete or change the listed schools by updating the information on FAFSA on the Web. Select “Make FAFSA Corrections” after logging in, then go to the “School Selection” page.
Students can also change the list of colleges by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433- 3243). The student will need to have his or her data release number (DRN) from the SAR when calling. Students can also add a school by giving their DRN to the school.
Do not confuse the DRN with the FSA ID and Password. The FSA ID is used to sign and file the FAFSA, access personal information on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), and to sign federal education loan promissory notes electronically. The FSA ID and Password should not be shared with anyone. The DRN may be shared with college financial aid staff and the Federal Student Aid Information Center to allow them to access the information on the FAFSA.
Which Schools Receive Updated Information?
Only the schools listed on the FAFSA will receive an ISIR for any subsequent updates or corrections in the student's information. Colleges that were listed previously on the FAFSA can still get access to these changes, but will not be notified when a change occurs. The student should alert these colleges to changes in the student's or parent's data, if changes were made.
