In most cases you do not have to pay back grants. Grants are financial awards given by the government, state or educational institutions to help pay for college.

Fellowships are like scholarships, but are used to pay for graduate school instead of undergraduate school. Many fellowships are available for graduate students in science, mathematics, engineering, and the arts and humanities. There are also several prestigious fellowships for international study.

Grants are gift-aid, money that does not need to be repaid. There are a variety of federal grants for college students, such as the Pell Grant, as well as state and institutional grants that come directly from your school.
