Graduate students are not eligible for subsidized federal student loans. Only undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need can receive Direct Subsidized Loans.
Federal student loan options for graduate students
Graduate and professional students still have access to federal student aid.
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans are open to both undergraduate and graduate students, no matter their financial need. Interest starts to build as soon as the loan is given out. For the 2026-2027 academic year and beyond, graduate students can borrow up to $20,500 each year and professional students up to $50,000.
Direct Unsubsidized loans offer the same federal benefits as subsidized loans, including income-driven repayment plans and possible loan forgiveness.
