FAFSA School Codes

Federal School Codes are six-character alphanumeric codes that uniquely identify colleges and universities that are eligible for Title IV federal student aid programs. Federal School Codes begin with the number 0 (zero) or the letter B, E or G.

If you are completing the FAFSA, you would look up school codes to includes in your FAFSA School List. You can include up to 10 schools on your FAFSA application if you are completing your application on the web or through the mobile myStudentAid app.

There are several ways of finding a college’s Federal School Code:

You don’t necessarily need your school code before you start completing the FAFSA, you can look up the school code by just completing an electronic version on the FAFSA.

If you need to find your school code, most colleges list their Federal School Codes in the financial aid section of their website.

The U.S. Department of Education provides a Federal School Code Search tool on its website. Entering the state and city in which the school is located will make the search for the college or university easier. This tool recognizes common abbreviations, acronyms, and alternate spellings like MIT and Caltech. If the college is located outside the U.S., select the name of the country or “Foreign Country” as the state.
