Fellowships are a form of gift aid, money that does not need to be repaid. They are similar to scholarships, but are directed at graduate and professional school students instead of undergraduate students.
Every year, close to 200,000 graduate and professional students are awarded over $1 billion in private scholarships. Although students in Ph.D. programs have a higher likelihood of receiving a private fellowship, more than half of these fellowships are actually awarded to students in Master's degree programs. Students pursuing professional degree programs receive about a fifth of these private fellowships.
