Is there really a left-handed scholarship?

The Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship provides a scholarship worth $1,000 to $1,500 a year for currently enrolled left-handed students at Juniata College. Juniata College is a small, liberal arts college located in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

Frederick Beckley and Mary Francis met at Juniata College in 1919 when their tennis coach paired them because they were both left-handed. They married in 1924. The scholarship was established in 1979 after their death through a $24,000 bequest to the college.

The left-handed scholarship is open to left-handed sophomores, juniors and seniors at Juniata College. It is not available to students attending other colleges. Recipients must be left-handed and demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. The scholarship is very competitive, since about 10 percent of the student population nationally is left-handed.
